  • ¿Cuánto dinero? (masculine, singular)

  • ¿Cuánta gente? (feminine, singular)

  • ¿Cuántos libros? (masculine, plural)

  • ¿Cuántas sillas? (feminine, plural)

Part 2: The Structure - How to Build a Question

Now that you have the words, let's look at how to put them together. Spanish question structure can be quite flexible.

Punctuation: The Inverted Question Mark (¿)

The first thing you'll notice in written Spanish is that all questions start with an upside-down question mark (¿) and end with a regular one (?). This is a helpful signal to the reader to change their intonation from the very beginning of the sentence.

Type 1: "Yes/No" Questions

These are questions that can be answered with a simple "yes" or "no." There are three easy ways to form them.

  1. Use Your Voice (Intonation): You can take any statement and turn it into a question just by raising the pitch of your voice at the end.

    • Statement: Hablas inglés. (You speak English.)

    • Question: ¿Hablas inglés? (Do you speak English?)

  2. Flip the Word Order (Inversion): A very common way to ask a question is to put the verb before the subject.

    • Statement: El tren llega a las cinco. (The train arrives at five.)

    • Question: ¿Llega el tren a las cinco? (Does the train arrive at five?)

  3. Add a Tag: You can add a "tag" like ¿no? or ¿verdad? to the end of a statement to ask for confirmation.

    • Estás cansado, ¿verdad? (You're tired, right?)

    • Vamos al cine, ¿no? (We're going to the movies, aren't we?)

Type 2: "Information" Questions

When you use the question words from Part 1, the structure is usually straightforward:

¿Question Word + Verb + Subject?

  • ¿Dónde vive María? (Where does Maria live?)

  • ¿Qué come el perro? (What does the dog eat?)

  • ¿Cuándo empieza la clase? (When does the class start?)

Part 3: Let's Talk! - Common Conversational Questions
